In September 2020, the Choirs Aotearoa New Zealand Trust (Choirs NZ) (Consisting of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Choir (NZSSC), New Zealand Youth Choir (NZYC) and Voices NZ) ran a choral composition competition to stimulate the creation of new and diverse New Zealand music for choirs. I entered my piece 'Takoto man rā' into the Waiata Tira category of the competition, which it ended up winning! I'm very proud of this piece as it was written as a mihi to my grandfather Waata Rameka who had passed away in 2016. The piece also won the Douglas Mews Prize for Choral Composition in 2019, which you can read about here. A special shout-out to all the other winners and commended works, and to Rosa Elliot who won the overall competition and has been selected as the Composer-in-Residence for Choirs NZ. You can read more about the competition here, or purchase the score on my SOUNZ page (coming soon!).
